British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
